Orchard Road Megamall
Last August 9, I was invited to Orchard Road in Megamall to have a taste of their dishes. We were also presented with their promo: the Orchard Road Dining Pass. We were told that we can order two (2) items in the ten (10) dishes so five (5) of us bloggers teamed up together to ensure that we can order all ten (10) dishes. So presenting to you.. the dishes involved in the Orchard Road Dining pass (which would be their best sellers also).
I’m not that familiar with Singaporean Cuisine so I’ll try to compare them with some local dishes I have tried just to describe it better.
1. Singapore Fried Chicken
Crunchy skin and juicy chicken meat! Yum Yum that you don’t need any gravy for it.
2. Char Siew Rice or Noodles
A different name for the very familiar pork BBQ. Nothing special on this one as the taste was very familiar already to my taste-bud.
3. Chicken Curry Rice or Noodles
To those who love curry, you may want to get this one as this one spells S-P-I-C-Y on it. The highlight of this dish would be the soup where in every sip, you would feel something in your throat. I’m not really a fan of spicy food so I passed up on this one after a few sips.
4. Char Kway Teow
One of the two “dry” noodle dishes we had. Is this the Singaporean version of “Pancit Canton“? Stir fried flat noodles in soy sauce and other ingredients such as shrimp, pork and bean sprouts.
5. Mee Goreng
The second “dry” noodle dish. Similar to Char Kway Teow minus the soy sauce, different noodle used and lesser ingredients to go with it. Due to that, I liked the Char Kway Teow more as this was more bland.
6. Satay Chicken
If I were to describe this one, it would be “chicken BBQ with a mildly sweet sauce dip and some cucumbers and onions on the side”. However, BBQ won’t be the right term because “Satay” has a distinct smell and color (yellow). According to wikipedia, this is because of the ingredient Turmenic which is used as the marinate.
7. Hainanese Chicken Rice
One of their best sellers and specialties according to the owner of Orchard Road. The boiled chicken (in garlic and other ingredients) comes with three sauces (chili sauce, ginger and soy sauce). I tried the chicken only and it was tender and flavorful. The only sauce I tried was the chili sauce which added a spicy kick to it.
This was the first time I tried laksa so I did some research. There are a lot of different variants for Laksa and I believe what we had was the curry version of Laksa. This tasted like noodles with coconut milk and curry powder. I also tasted something crunchy which was the bean sprouts. I enjoyed this one (not too spicy) and it had a tasty soup. I was just shy to grab the bowl and finish it in front of other bloggers. One of Orchard road’s best sellers!
Curry laksa is a coconut curry soup with noodles.
9. Red Ruby & Sago Melaka
This was for our dessert! You can pick one of them but why pick if you can have both?
Red Ruby – water chestnuts (first time I heard of this) with coconut milk and shaved ice. The water chestnuts (red) was crunch and the dessert was not so sweet.
Sago Melaka – Sago that bundled together with black gulaman and coconut milk? This looks like a pudding with different ingredients. Yummy!
10. Roti Pratha with Coffee or Tea
This is similar to “Roti”, the Indian Bread where I liked to dip in curry sauce. Although this one was “thinner” than the “Roti” I know. The sauce tasted similar but I liked the curry sauce more.
So that’s all folks! I had fun eating the food at Orchard Road and if you would ask me, I would say that these were my favorites.
- Singaporean Fried Chicken / Hainanese Chicken Rice
- Laksa / Char Kway Teow
- Red Ruby
